Habitat for Humanity has transformed millions of lives by providing stable, affordable homeownership, exemplified by stories like Janet and George. Just over twenty years ago, Janet and George found themselves living in substandard housing. Janet was experiencing health concerns at the time, and they were searching for answers. George’s mother suggested they contact Habitat for Humanity of Logan County.

At Habitat for Humanity, families partner with volunteers to build their homes, which fosters a sense of pride and community. The Habitat home ownership program includes education to promote financial security, allowing families to move out of unsafe conditions into energy-efficient, permanent homes. They achieved their dream of owning a home after each completing 350 hours of sweat equity and financial counseling. They secured their new home with a 0% interest loan on September 23, 2006, providing their family with a safe, long-term home.

 

Janet and George worked hard growing their clients with Cleaners Extraordinaire, cleaning local rest areas and state buildings. They never missed house payment in nearly twenty years. A loss in George’s family in 2025 resulted in an inheritance that allowed Janet and George to pay off their mortgage early. Habitat for Humanity conducts mortgage burning ceremonies in celebration of the moment a partner family completely pays off their mortgage. This tradition symbolizes financial freedom, resilience, and the successful completion of the journey toward homeownership. Congratulations Janet and George!
